The GTA 5 on the PS5 and XSX / S reportedly runs in 4K at 60 fps

In the eleventh month, Grand Theft Auto 5 will receive improved versions for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S consoles. Rockstar has announced a visually more beautiful game but has yet to reveal details of what exactly will be beautified and to what extent.

If the announcement on the official PlayStation blog for Germany is to be believed, the GTA 5 will run on the PlayStation 5 in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second (and probably on competing Xbox consoles as well). This may be an assumption or mere conjecture, but such a graphic jump would be expected.

Namely, anything above 1080p and 30 fps would be an improvement over the old version of GTA 5. Although the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One got their more powerful models, GTA 5 is one of the few big games that has never been upgraded for the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X.

Now, is it a native 4K resolution or dynamic upscaling from a lower resolution, is 60 fps paired with 4K resolution or separately? These are questions that the PlayStation blog does not currently offer an answer to.

Rockstar still managed to achieve the performance of Red Dead Redemption 2 in the native generation in 4K resolution (on Xbox One X), but at 30 frames per second. It is not impossible to achieve an even better result on more powerful hardware, but that would require additional game optimization.

Although GTA 5 is an eight-year-old game, the PC version is still one of the more demanding games in 4K resolution. For example, for stable 60+ fps at 4K resolution on ultra detail, you need at least an RTX 2080 or RTX 3070 graphics card paired with some capable processor. And only those cards cost more than current consoles.

In any case, if the rumor of 60 fps comes true, on PlayStation consoles it will be the first time in history that a single GTA game has run on that framerate. With the arrival of the Series X and S consoles, the Xbox accelerated GTA 4 to a consistent 60 fps, but Rockstar had no contribution to make. Previously, the game ran at 60 fps on the Xbox One X console, but with constant slowdowns.
